Two Men Injured After Gunman Opens Fire on CTA Bus Following Argument on Chicago’s Northwest Side

CHICAGO, IL — A late-night altercation on a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) bus turned violent Sunday, leaving two men injured after a gunman fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene.

According to Chicago police, the incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. in the 4800 block of West Belmont Avenue on the city’s Northwest Side. Authorities say a 40-year-old man was involved in a heated argument with another passenger while riding the bus. The confrontation quickly escalated when the suspect exited the vehicle, retrieved a handgun, and fired several rounds into the bus before running from the area.

The 40-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and leg. Emergency responders arrived swiftly and transported him to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was reported to be in fair condition. A second victim, a 22-year-old man who was not involved in the initial dispute, sustained a graze wound to his ankle. He was taken to Community First Medical Center and is currently listed in good condition.

The shooter managed to escape before police arrived. As of Monday morning, no arrests had been made. Area Five detectives are actively investigating the incident and reviewing security footage from the bus and surrounding areas to identify the suspect.

Authorities have not yet released a detailed description of the gunman, but they confirmed that the shooting appeared to stem directly from the argument between the suspect and the older victim. Officials have not ruled out the possibility that the two men knew each other prior to the incident.

The CTA issued a statement Monday morning, expressing concern for the victims and emphasizing their ongoing collaboration with police:
“Safety remains our highest priority. We are working closely with law enforcement to assist in the investigation and ensure that measures are in place to protect riders and operators.”

This shooting comes amid growing concerns about violence on public transit across Chicago. City officials recently announced plans to bolster security on CTA buses and trains, including adding more uniformed officers and improving surveillance.

Chicago police are urging any witnesses or anyone with information about the shooter’s identity to contact Area Five detectives or leave an anonymous tip via CPD’s tip line.

Meanwhile, service on the affected bus route was temporarily suspended overnight for the investigation but resumed normal operations Monday morning.

Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
