Tragedy Strikes Viking Fest: ECSU Student Isaiah Caldwell Fatally Shot, Three Others Injured Amid Campus Chaos

Elizabeth City, NC
The Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) community is mourning a devastating loss following the tragic death of student Isaiah Caldwell, who was fatally shot during the university’s annual Viking Fest celebrations on Saturday, April 26, 2025.

Authorities said the shooting took place just before midnight near Bias Hall, where hundreds of students, alumni, and visitors had gathered to celebrate one of the most anticipated weekends of the school year. What began as a night of fellowship and school spirit quickly turned into a scene of terror when individuals unaffiliated with ECSU opened fire on campus.

Isaiah Caldwell, a member of the Great Dane Chapter (Fall 2021 line) and a beloved figure among his peers, was caught in the crossfire. Despite swift transport by private individuals to Tallassee Community Hospital and immediate medical intervention, Caldwell tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased upon arrival.

In addition to Caldwell’s death, three other students suffered gunshot wounds to their legs and abdomen. They were rushed to a local hospital for treatment and are currently in stable condition.

Shortly after the incident, Elizabeth City Police and ECSU campus police issued a shelter-in-place alert, warning students and residents to stay indoors as law enforcement responded in force.
Agencies involved in the ongoing investigation include the Elizabeth City State University Police Department, Elizabeth City Police Department, Pasquotank County Sheriff’s Office, Camden County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI).

Eyewitness accounts described scenes of panic and heartbreak as students scrambled for safety. Victoria Lewis, a parent of two family members on campus, told Channel2 NOW:

“My daughter and her friends were able to hide safely, and my grandson somehow ran away from the danger. We are beyond grateful they made it — but our hearts ache for those who didn’t.”

Officials have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to campus safety. ECSU has since increased security patrols, restricted access to campus areas near the shooting, and remains committed to maintaining a safe environment as investigations continue.

In a statement issued Sunday morning, university officials expressed profound sorrow:

“Our Viking community is devastated. Isaiah Caldwell was a bright, compassionate student whose life ended far too soon. We mourn alongside his family, friends, and all those impacted by this senseless act of violence.”

To support students grappling with grief and trauma, ECSU Counseling Services opened at the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center on Sunday, April 27, 2025, starting at 10:30 a.m., with counselors available throughout the day. After-hours support is also available for any student, faculty, or staff member in need.

The university has pledged transparency as the investigation moves forward and urges anyone with information, including video or eyewitness accounts, to contact the Elizabeth City Police Department immediately.

As Elizabeth City State University heals from this unimaginable tragedy, the memory of Isaiah Caldwell — his kindness, leadership, and vibrant spirit — will remain forever etched in the heart of the Viking community.
