Manhunt Underway After Deadly Domestic Dispute in Floyd County: 67-Year-Old Larry Johnson Wanted for Murder of Steven Adkins in Auxier Shooting Incident

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky – April 25, 2025 — A quiet Friday afternoon in the tight-knit community of Auxier, Kentucky, turned tragic as law enforcement and emergency crews responded to the scene of a deadly shooting that has left one man dead and a community in shock.

According to the Floyd County Coroner, the victim has been identified as 48-year-old Steven Adkins of Prestonsburg. He was rushed to Highland Regional Medical Center following the incident, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The Kentucky State Police (KSP) confirmed that the shooting stemmed from what investigators are calling a “domestic dispute.”

The suspected shooter, 67-year-old Larry Johnson of Auxier, is now the subject of an active manhunt. Authorities say Johnson fled the scene of the shooting in a vehicle, which was later discovered abandoned. He is believed to have escaped into a heavily wooded area near Jane Brown Branch. The last confirmed sighting of Johnson described him wearing a blue flannel shirt and blue jeans.

KSP has issued an arrest warrant for Johnson, charging him with murder. Law enforcement is urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward and is warning residents in the area to remain cautious. Police have not disclosed whether Johnson is armed but advise the public not to approach him under any circumstances.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, both State Route 321 and the Auxier Bridge were closed to allow first responders to secure the scene and begin their investigation. Both thoroughfares have since reopened, but a heavy law enforcement presence remains in the area.

Multiple agencies, including the Prestonsburg Police Department, Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, and KSP troopers, are actively participating in the ongoing search and investigation. K-9 units and aerial support are also believed to be assisting in the effort to locate Johnson.

“This is a devastating situation for everyone involved,” a spokesperson from KSP said in a brief statement Friday evening. “We are doing everything in our power to bring the suspect into custody and ensure the safety of this community.”

As the investigation continues, many in Floyd County are left grappling with the gravity of the incident. Friends and family of Steven Adkins are mourning the sudden and violent loss of a man they say was kind, hardworking, and deeply loved by those who knew him.

Authorities are expected to provide updates as the search continues. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through local news outlets and the official Kentucky State Police channels.
