April 26, 2025 — Kansas City, MO
The Kansas City, Missouri Police Department is investigating a heartbreaking double homicide after two young males, believed to be teenagers, were found dead inside a vehicle early Saturday afternoon.
Officers were dispatched to the intersection of East 12th Street and Belmont Avenue around 12:45 p.m., following a report of a shooting in the area. Upon arriving at the scene, someone flagged down officers and directed them to a parked vehicle on the roadway. Inside, officers discovered the bodies of two young males suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Paramedics who responded to the scene quickly determined that both victims were deceased. The identities and exact ages of the victims have not yet been confirmed, but authorities believe both were in their teenage years.
A preliminary investigation suggests that the two victims were involved in an altercation with at least one suspect while inside the vehicle. At some point during the confrontation, the suspect opened fire, fatally wounding both young men.
Shortly after arriving on scene, police were able to take a person of interest into custody. Officials have not yet disclosed the individual’s identity, possible charges, or specific connection to the case, citing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
“We are working diligently to piece together exactly what led up to this tragic event,” a Kansas City Police Department spokesperson said in a brief press statement. “Our detectives are processing the scene, speaking with witnesses, and gathering all available evidence. We ask anyone who has any information to please come forward.”
The deaths have cast a somber cloud over the surrounding community, which has grappled with an ongoing struggle against youth violence and gun crime. Residents near 12th and Belmont expressed sadness and frustration over yet another fatal shooting involving young people.
“Two young lives lost — it’s heartbreaking and infuriating,” said Jessica Warren, a neighbor who lives nearby. “Something has to change.”
The scene at 12th and Belmont remained active for several hours as police cordoned off the area with crime scene tape and investigators combed for clues. Authorities have not stated whether additional suspects are being sought.
This remains a developing story, and updates are expected as investigators work to notify the victims’ families and determine a clearer timeline of events.
