Frederick Douglass High School Mourns Loss of Beloved Student-Athlete Matthew Perrine
LEXINGTON, KY — The Frederick Douglass High School community is reeling after the tragic loss of Matthew Perrine, a beloved student-athlete whose life was cut short unexpectedly over the weekend. Matthew, a standout both on and off the field, passed away on Saturday, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, kindness, and leadership that touched countless lives.
According to school officials, Matthew Perrine, 17, was a senior at Frederick Douglass High School and a key member of the Broncos’ football and track teams. Known for his infectious smile, tireless work ethic, and selfless spirit, Matthew had already earned multiple accolades for his athletic performances and was being actively recruited by several colleges across the country.
“Our hearts are broken,” said Principal Lester Diaz in a statement. “Matthew was not just an exceptional athlete; he was a young man of character, humility, and integrity. He inspired his peers, uplifted his teammates, and made our school a better place simply by being himself.”
While specific details surrounding Matthew’s death have not been fully disclosed out of respect for the family’s privacy, officials confirmed that grief counselors and support services have been made available to students and staff in the wake of the tragedy.
Students gathered Monday morning on the school’s football field for a vigil in Matthew’s honor. Many wore the school’s signature orange and green colors, and dozens brought flowers, handwritten letters, and candles to place around a framed photograph of Matthew in his football jersey. Coaches, teachers, classmates, and community leaders shared heartfelt memories, painting a portrait of a young man who was deeply admired and profoundly loved.
“Matt had a gift — not just athletic ability, but the ability to make everyone around him feel seen, heard, and valued,” said Coach Nathan McPeek, who coached Perrine throughout his high school football career. “He was the kind of person you knew was destined for greatness, both on and off the field.”
Matthew was known for volunteering his time with youth sports camps and local charitable initiatives, often mentoring younger athletes and encouraging them to pursue both academic and athletic success. Teachers described him as a diligent student who balanced a rigorous schedule of practices and competitions with strong academic achievements.
Social media has since been flooded with tributes from teammates, friends, teachers, and members of the broader Lexington community. Many shared memories of Matthew’s positive attitude, leadership qualities, and commitment to his dreams.
“Matthew Perrine embodied what it meant to be a Bronco,” said Fayette County Public Schools Superintendent Demetrus Liggins. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Matthew’s family, friends, and the entire Frederick Douglass High School community during this unimaginable time.”
A memorial service for Matthew Perrine is being planned by the school and his family, with details expected to be announced later this week. In the meantime, Frederick Douglass High School has canceled all athletic events for the week to allow students and staff time to grieve and support one another.
Matthew’s sudden passing has left a void in the hearts of many, but his legacy of perseverance, kindness, and excellence will continue to inspire all who knew him.
