Final Cause of Death Revealed for Legendary Actor Gene Hackman and Wife Betsy Arakawa Following Tragic Discovery

SANTA FE, N.M. — New details have emerged regarding the deaths of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, following the release of final autopsy reports and investigative documents. According to findings by the Office of the Medical Investigator in New Mexico, Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 63, died of separate but equally devastating health conditions that have gripped the public’s attention.

Hackman, a two-time Academy Award winner renowned for roles in films like The French Connection and Unforgiven, reportedly suffered from multiple chronic health issues. The autopsy revealed a history of congestive heart failure, severe chronic hypertension affecting his kidneys, and the presence of “neurodegenerative features consistent with Alzheimer’s Disease.” The documents also confirmed Hackman had previously undergone major cardiac procedures, including the placement of coronary artery stents, a bypass graft, and an aortic valve replacement.

Examinations showed Hackman had suffered remote myocardial infarctions (heart attacks) affecting significant portions of the heart. The final autopsy report noted no signs of foul play but listed a complex medical history, including advanced atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and severe hypertensive changes. Hackman had a bi-ventricular pacemaker implanted in April 2019 and tested negative for hantavirus — a key concern after his wife’s cause of death was revealed.

Toxicology results showed trace amounts of acetone in Hackman’s blood, suggesting possible diabetic or fasting-induced ketoacidosis at the time of death. His acetone levels were elevated compared to normal, consistent with a prolonged period without food.

Meanwhile, Betsy Arakawa’s death was officially attributed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare but often fatal disease transmitted from rodents to humans. The New Mexico Department of Health confirmed this diagnosis, noting the rapid progression from flu-like symptoms to severe respiratory and cardiac complications. Investigators uncovered that Arakawa had been actively researching COVID-19 and flu symptoms in the days leading up to her death. She had emailed a massage therapist about Hackman taking a COVID-19 test after experiencing cold-like symptoms and had visited the Cloudberry Health Center in Santa Fe for evaluation.

On February 26, 2025, maintenance workers Jesse Kesler and Roland Lowe Begay discovered the couple deceased inside their home. Hackman and Arakawa showed signs of advanced decomposition, indicating they had been deceased for several days before being found. Kesler’s frantic 911 call detailed the grim discovery, triggering a criminal investigation initially deemed necessary due to the suspicious circumstances at the scene.

Authorities conducted a thorough search of the residence and Arakawa’s electronic devices, confirming the timeline of her health decline. The investigation determined there was no external trauma to either Hackman or Arakawa, and no evidence of foul play was found.

Photos from the investigation showed signs of disarray in the home, but ultimately authorities ruled the deaths were the result of natural causes and medical complications — not a criminal act.

Gene Hackman’s illustrious career spanned over four decades, earning him accolades as one of Hollywood’s most respected talents. His passing, alongside his beloved wife Betsy Arakawa, marks a sorrowful chapter for fans and peers alike who remember his legendary contributions to film and entertainment.

Hackman, who retired from acting in 2004, lived a quiet life in New Mexico with Arakawa, a former classical pianist and businesswoman.
