April 26, 2025 — Princeton, NJ

The Princeton University community is grieving after the devastating discovery of undergraduate student Lauren Blackburn, who had been missing for nearly a week.

On Friday morning, search crews located Blackburn’s body at Lake Carnegie, a body of water adjacent to Princeton’s campus, the university confirmed in an official statement.

“Our hearts are heavy and we share our deepest condolences with Lauren’s family and friends,” the statement from Princeton University read.

Blackburn, a member of Princeton’s Class of 2026, was last seen around 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 19, near the Firestone Library, a central spot on the university’s historic campus. After she was reported missing, extensive search efforts were launched throughout the week, including sweeps of the lake and the surrounding wooded areas.

The cause of Blackburn’s death has not been immediately disclosed. Authorities have yet to confirm whether foul play is suspected or if the circumstances point to an accident or other cause. An autopsy is expected to be conducted to determine further details.

University officials have emphasized the importance of mental health support during this painful time. Counseling and Psychological Services have been made available to students 24/7 at 609-258-3141, and additional resources are being provided through the Office of Religious Life, residential college staff, and Graduate School staff. Faculty and staff can also seek assistance through Carebridge by calling 800-437-0911.

A gathering for students to reflect, grieve, and support one another has been organized, with details shared privately via university communication. Counselors, chaplains, and residential life staff will be present to provide comfort and support.

“We know that every member of our community joins us in sending our condolences to Lauren’s family, friends, and loved ones and in wishing them strength in this most difficult time,” the university added in its message.

Lauren Blackburn was described by those who knew her as bright, compassionate, and full of promise. News of her passing has sent waves of sorrow through the Princeton community, already reeling from the sudden loss of one of its own.

This remains a developing story as investigators continue to examine the circumstances surrounding Lauren Blackburn’s death.
