Three Students Injured, One Fatally, in Shooting at Elizabeth City State University During Viking Fest
ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a tragic shooting that occurred late Saturday night on the campus of Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), leaving one student dead and two others critically injured.
The shooting took place during the university’s annual Viking Fest, which had drawn hundreds of students, alumni, and visitors to the campus for various celebrations, including the ECSU Blue and White Vikings spring football game. The festivities, which took place throughout the day, were abruptly overshadowed by the violent incident.
At approximately 11:50 p.m. on April 26, 2025, the Elizabeth City Police Department issued a campus-wide emergency alert, urging students and residents to “shelter in place” after reports of gunfire near Bias Hall, a central area of the university campus.
Authorities confirmed that the shooting resulted in three students being injured, with one male student, later identified as Cameron Harris, tragically succumbing to his injuries at a local hospital.
The injured students, who sustained gunshot wounds to their legs and abdomen, were immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Jordan Harris and Taylor Miller, both 21-year-old students at ECSU, are currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Eyewitnesses describe scenes of panic as the crowd scattered in response to the gunshots. Victoria Lewis, a mother whose daughter and grandson were nearby, described the chaotic situation. “My daughter and her friends were able to find a place to hide, while my grandson, caught in the crossfire, managed to run in the opposite direction to safety,” she shared. “They are both safe. Nobody but God — I am truly grateful this morning.”
ECSU police, alongside the Elizabeth City Police Department, have launched a full investigation into the incident. As of now, no suspects have been identified, and authorities are asking anyone with information or footage related to the shooting to come forward.
University officials have expressed their condolences to the families and friends of the victims, offering support services to those affected by the tragic events.
ECSU President Dr. James H. Smith issued a statement, saying, “Our hearts are with the victims and their families during this incredibly difficult time. We are working closely with local authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this incident and ensure the safety and security of all those on campus.”
The investigation is ongoing, and updates are expected to be provided as more information becomes available. Authorities have urged anyone with knowledge of the shooting to contact law enforcement immediately.
The ECSU community is mourning the loss of a beloved student while coming together to support the injured, as students, faculty, and staff process the tragic events that unfolded during what was meant to be a joyous celebration.
