Tragic Shooting at Houston Family Barbecue Leaves One Dead and 13 Injured After Violent Confrontation in Mayfair Neighborhood
HOUSTON, TX — A tragic incident unfolded early Saturday morning in Houston’s Mayfair neighborhood, when a family barbecue turned to violence, leaving 14 people shot, including one confirmed fatality and several others in critical condition. The shooting occurred just before 1:00 a.m. in the 6000 block of Cherryhill Drive, near Loop 610 and Mykawa Road.
The Tragic Turn of Events
According to Houston Police Department (HPD) Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu, the deadly altercation began when an uninvited guest was asked to leave the gathering. In what quickly escalated into violence, the individual allegedly opened fire as he walked away from the party. In response, several individuals at the gathering returned gunfire, resulting in a chaotic scene.
The exchange of gunfire spread quickly across the property and into the surrounding areas, leaving victims scattered throughout the scene. Witnesses describe a situation that escalated too rapidly for anyone to react. HPD officers arrived on scene just three minutes after the initial 911 call, and reports of ongoing gunfire continued as they worked to secure the area.
Medical Response and Victim Details
Emergency medical teams were dispatched immediately, treating victims on-site and transporting others to nearby hospitals. Some victims were transported via private vehicles, while others were rushed by ambulance, including three victims who were dropped off at a Jack-in-the-Box restaurant located on Long Street near Loop 610.
Among the 14 individuals struck by gunfire, one person was pronounced dead at the hospital, while several others remain in critical condition after undergoing surgery. Others sustained non-life-threatening injuries and are now in stable condition.
Authorities have not yet released the names of the deceased or injured individuals, and their families are awaiting confirmation. The victims are reported to have varying injuries, ranging from gunshot wounds to the chest and torso to leg injuries.
Ongoing Investigation and Suspects
Multiple individuals were detained at the scene for questioning. Two suspects have been taken into custody, one of whom was apprehended at gunpoint. However, HPD has not yet confirmed whether any of the detained individuals were responsible for the initial gunfire.
“This was a very complex, active scene with multiple crime scenes, and officers were still hearing gunshots when they arrived,” said Assistant Chief Cantu. “The situation was chaotic from the beginning, and we are working to gather all the facts.”
The HPD Homicide Division is leading the investigation. Police are asking anyone who attended the party, left before officers arrived, or transported victims to hospitals to come forward with information.

This tragedy has left the Mayfair neighborhood in shock. Local community leaders have expressed their concern over the impact of the shooting and are calling for solidarity in the face of such violence. As investigations continue, the community is coming together to support the families affected by the loss.
