Clearwater Ferry Crash: One Dead, Multiple Injured After Hit-and-Run Collision Near Memorial Causeway

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Tragedy struck Clearwater’s waters Sunday evening when a ferry packed with passengers was struck by another boat, leading to one death, several serious injuries, and a frantic search for the fleeing suspect.

The incident occurred around 8:43 p.m. near the Memorial Causeway Bridge, when a private vessel collided with the Clearwater Ferry, which was carrying over 40 passengers at the time. The impact forced the ferry onto a nearby sandbar, where it came to an abrupt and battered stop.

Authorities quickly declared the scene a “mass casualty incident,” mobilizing dozens of first responders and notifying all area hospitals to prepare for incoming trauma patients.

A Chaotic and Tragic Scene

Witnesses described a chaotic scene as passengers were thrown from their seats and emergency responders waded through shallow water illuminated only by flashlights and the occasional flicker of the ferry’s battered navigation lights.

Six people were initially declared “trauma alerts”, two of whom had to be airlifted to area hospitals due to the severity of their injuries. Others were rushed to facilities including Morton Plant Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa. Sadly, Clearwater officials later confirmed that one person succumbed to their injuries.

Suspect Fled the Scene, Later Caught

Adding to the horror of the night, officials say the operator of the boat that struck the ferry fled the scene immediately after the crash, turning the case into a hit-and-run on water.

Law enforcement agencies launched a rapid and coordinated search. Hours later, less than four miles from the crash site, officers located a blue and white center console boat with visible damage to its hull. The vessel, bearing the brand name “Statement,” was found at the Belleair Causeway ramp, surrounded by a heavy police presence, including sheriff forensics and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers.

Investigators were seen taking photographs of the boat’s scrapes and damage, and questioning a man believed to be involved. The investigation remains active, and authorities have not yet confirmed whether impairment played a role in the crash.

A Ferry with Deep Ties to Clearwater

Founded in 2015, the Clearwater Ferry has become a vital transportation link, helping residents and tourists alike bypass the notoriously congested Memorial Causeway. In recent years, ridership had increased dramatically, especially after the opening of Coachman Park and significant local investment in new ferry boats.

Earlier this year, the Pinellas County Transit Agency took over ferry operations, aiming to expand service and meet rising demand.

The ferry involved in the collision — one of a small fleet — typically transports dozens of passengers per trip between downtown Clearwater, Clearwater Beach Marina, and Dunedin Marina. Sunday’s crash marks the most serious incident in its operating history.

Ongoing Investigation

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the U.S. Coast Guard are now leading the investigation into the crash. Officials are examining how the collision occurred, whether safety protocols were followed, and whether criminal charges — including manslaughter or boating under the influence — may be filed.

Clearwater Police spokesperson Rob Shaw emphasized the gravity of the situation: “This was a significant incident with tragic outcomes. We are working closely with our partners to ensure a thorough investigation.”

Meanwhile, grief ripples through the Clearwater community as families await updates on the injured and mourn the loss of life.

A Community Shaken

Residents who witnessed the aftermath stood solemnly along the Memorial Causeway late into the night, watching flashing red and blue lights dance across the water. The scene, typically serene with views of the Gulf, was instead marked by shattered calm and heavy hearts.

“This ferry is a part of our daily lives,” said Clearwater resident Angela Torres, who lives nearby. “It’s devastating to see something like this happen so close to home.”

As the investigation unfolds, officials urge anyone with information or video footage from the area to come forward.
