Nassau County Candidate Petros Krommidas Reported Missing Amid Heated Election Race

NASSAU COUNTY, N.Y. — Petros Krommidas, the Democratic candidate running for Nassau County’s 4th Legislative District, has been reported missing, prompting urgent concern among law enforcement officials, political leaders, and the broader community.

Krommidas, 42, was last seen Friday evening leaving a private campaign strategy meeting in Baldwin, according to a statement from the Nassau County Police Department. His family reported him missing early Sunday morning after he failed to return home and missed a series of public engagements over the weekend — including a major town hall event he was scheduled to headline.

Authorities have launched an active investigation but have so far released few details. Police say there is no immediate evidence of foul play; however, given Krommidas’s public profile and the high-stakes nature of the upcoming election, they are treating the case with “the highest level of seriousness.”

“We are exhausting every resource at our disposal,” said Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder at a press briefing Sunday afternoon. “We are asking for the public’s help. Anyone who may have seen Mr. Krommidas or has any relevant information is urged to come forward immediately.”

Krommidas has emerged in recent months as a rising figure in local politics, campaigning vigorously on promises to revitalize small businesses, expand affordable housing, and reform community policing practices. His campaign has garnered significant grassroots momentum, setting the stage for a closely watched race against Republican incumbent John Ferretti.

Political allies and community members expressed shock and deep concern over the news.

“Petros is not just a candidate — he’s a father, a neighbor, and a passionate advocate for our community,” said Anna Morales, his campaign manager. “We are devastated by his disappearance and are praying for his safe return.”

Several Democratic leaders across New York issued public statements Sunday evening, pausing their own campaign activities in solidarity. “Today we set aside politics,” said Nassau County Democratic Committee Chair Marisol Vega. “Our only focus is on the safe return of Petros Krommidas.”

Krommidas is described as approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 175 pounds, with short brown hair and green eyes. He was last seen wearing a navy suit and carrying a black messenger bag. Police are reviewing surveillance footage from surrounding areas and interviewing potential witnesses.

As word of his disappearance spread, community members began organizing volunteer search efforts and sharing information across social media with the hashtag #FindPetros. Posters have been distributed in Baldwin, Freeport, and Merrick, and a candlelight vigil is planned for Monday evening outside the Baldwin Community Center.

This latest development comes just weeks before voters head to the polls, adding an air of uncertainty to an already volatile election season in Nassau County. Still, local leaders stressed that the immediate priority must remain on Krommidas’s welfare, not politics.

“This is a moment for unity, compassion, and vigilance,” said Bishop Terrence Holloway, a longtime Baldwin resident and civic leader. “We must do everything in our power to bring Petros home safely.”

The Nassau County Police Department’s Missing Persons Squad is leading the investigation. Anyone with information is urged to contact (516) 573-7347 or call 911.
